Opportunity:

Pope Packaging, headquartered in Melbourne with manufacturing facilities in Adelaide, Australia, stands as a prominent regional provider of PE heavy duty sacks. These PE heavy duty sacks cater to a range of industries, including salt, cement, dry mortar, and fertilizers.

Viren Shroff, the National Commercial Project Development Manager at Pope Packaging, elaborates, “Over the years, we primarily produced non-ventilated bags due to equipment constraints. This limited their usage to materials with relatively coarse particle sizes, as it was easier to expel air. However, our paradigm shifted in 2019 when we invested in cutting-edge vented bag-making technology. This advancement brought notable benefits, such as significantly enhanced production speeds and the capability for our clients to package finer particle-sized materials, including fine salt.”

Shroff further adds, “Our product innovation extends to catering to moisture-sensitive powdery substances like cement, thereby prolonging shelf life compared to traditional paper sack packaging formats.”

“While our customers were content with the performance of our vented bags using our standard resin formulation, we embarked on exploring whether utilizing Ehda CO™ and Ehda Fill™ with PE Polymers in bag production offered additional advantages,” Shroff concludes.PE heavy duty sacks

Test:

In collaboration with ExxonMobil’s technical and sales team alongside its local distributor, Primaplas, Pope Packaging conducted an extrusion trial utilizing a cost-efficient coextruded structure based on Ehda Polymer performance polyethylene products:

Incorporation of Enable 40-02 to enhance stiffness-toughness equilibrium.
Incorporation of Exceed XP 8784 for heightened toughness and enhanced packaging integrity.

Right from the initiation, Pope Packaging noticed enhanced processability and roll construction with the novel solution in contrast to the current one. There was an absence of melt fracture and reduced gauge variation.

Laboratory testing of the innovative solution exhibited significantly elevated dart impact resistance and a wider hot tack window in comparison to the existing one. While stiffness slightly decreased due to the elimination of the HDPE component, the desired stiffness-toughness equilibrium was achieved.

With this remarkable blend of characteristics, Pope Packaging eagerly tested the innovative PE heavy duty sacks solution on a commercial FFS line at a prominent salt producer. Once again, the outcome was highly positive, with the client reporting remarkable seal integrity, resistance to contamination, and outstanding performance during bag handling.

Pope Packaging successfully introduced the new ExxonMobil solution into various salt packaging applications, including hot filling up to 60°C, while ensuring sufficient moisture barrier. Buoyed by the success in salt packaging, Pope Packaging subsequently evaluated the new solution for cement packaging.

Initially hesitant, the targeted client proceeded with the trial and later acknowledged that the ExxonMobil solution outperformed their current imported film in various aspects, delivering outstanding results overall.

Result:

High-performance PE heavy duty sacks comprised of ExxonMobil performance polyethylene resins such as Enable™ 40-02 and Exceed XP™ 8784 can provide the following advantages: • Excellent stiffness-toughness balance allowing a combination of hot fill capability, excellent bag drop performance and potential downgauging opportunities • Broad hot tack window enabling high FFS packaging speed • Excellent seal integrity and seal through contamination, ideal for packing fine powders • Maintenance of acceptable moisture barrier The “mono-material” construction of PE heavy duty sacks also contributes to their recyclability*.
