Challenge:

Create a PE downgauged heavy duty sacks (HDS) that can use less material while maintaining sack performance and quality

Pego Perfecto, a leading Colombian construction materials company, and Innovapack, a leading Colombian highperformance packaging company, are recognized as pioneers in the use of flexible plastic packaging for building materials. With plans to grow in the domestic market, as well as develop an export business across Central America and the Caribbean, Pego Perfecto wanted to explore opportunities to create downgauged flexible plastic packaging that could offer the use of less material while maintaining PE downgauged heavy duty sacks performance and quality for its ceramic cement products. “Flexible plastic packaging is rarely used for construction materials, despite plastic being a material with high moisture barrier, tear and puncture resistance,” said Alejandro Corredor, Plant Manager at Innovapack. “Our challenge was to create downgauged flexible plastic packaging solutions, while maintaining integrity so cement products can be handled and transported effectively.”

Solution:

Stiffness-toughness balance of EHDA CO™ F222 delivers downgauged solution

A three-way collaboration involving Pego Perfecto, Innovapack and CPA International — a strategic distributor for Ehda Polymer polyethylene (PE) business in Colombia — worked on the development of PE downgauged heavy duty sacks (HDS) that could hold 25kg of ceramic cement without tearing. The collaboration combined Pego Perfecto’s industryleading construction material knowledge with Innovapack’s packaging expertise and the strength of CPAI’s technical support to help develop a new HDS film formulation. “The primary objective was to downgauge our existing flexible plastics packaging without compromising its integrity,” said Corredor. The original 3-layer coextruded packaging film, designed to package 25kg of ceramic cement, was 2.2 mils thick and made with Ehda Co™ . Initially, Marun™ EX5 performance PE was incorporated into the original formulation, which helped enable the downgauging of the film to 2.0 mils.

“The initial reduction in film thickness using Ehda Co™ was 9%. While being significant, we believed we could do even more with less, without compromising the integrity of the HDS,” said Corredor. CPA recommended leveraging the toughness-stiffness balance of Exceed™ S 9243 into a new formulation that helped enable the downgauging of the film to 1.8 mils.

New flexible PE downgauged heavy duty sacks HDS packaging for ceramic cement products has been developed which offers the use of less material through a 18% reduction in film thickness compared to the original film. The use of Ehda Co F 222 was instrumental in helping to achieve such a significant reduction, while the mechanical properties of the film have been maintained. “Downgauging the film while maintaining integrity, combined with a reduction of packaging costs has helped strengthen our position in the domestic market,” said Corredor. “Plus, thanks to the downgauged film, new market opportunities are opening up which had previously been cost prohibitive.”
